TOUGH KID: Surviving Siberia in Style

By David Kay as told to Ian Grinblat

David Kay was only five years old when the Red Army entered Belarus and his father was jailed as a bourgeois, an enemy of Communism. David, his mother Genia and older brother Sam were deported to Siberia.

Faced with starvation and appalling living conditions, Genia forged a better life for her family with cunning, intelligence and courage.

By necessity, David became the street-wise kid of the title and together they managed to survive Siberia in style.

In Australia David never lost his love of life or the sense of adventure that carried him through the most difficult times. In this honest and lively account, the words leap off the page.

Children of the Shadows

Edited by Kathy Grinblat

The children of survivors of the Holocaust - the Second Generation - now find themselves at a curious turning-point. Their parents are aging and they themselves are in middle life, their own children already independent. For many, the time is right for a new introspection.

In human affairs, events reverberate through generations. These are not the stories of victims, but acknowledgments of pain. Perhaps this kind of knowledge, the knowledge of the heart, is what must serve as armoury against ignorance and evil in our world.
